The overall teledensity rose to 18 per cent in February 2007 from 17.45 per cent in January 2007 and from 12.18 per cent as on February 28, 2006. The total number of telephones in the country crossed more than 203 million, as against a total of 196.7 million as on January 31, 2007, a growth of 3.2 per cent. The total number of telecom subscribers for the month of February rose to 6.3 million phones, with an average daily addition of more than two lakh lines. During the month, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi added more than three lakh subscribers each in the GSM segment. Almost the entire growth registered during the month was in the wireless segment with GSM and CDMA, contributing 4.88 million and 1.35 million, respectively. There was a marginal increase of about 67 thousand subscribers in the fixed line segment. In the CDMA segment, the total subscriber base registered a growth of 2.9 per cent with a net addition of 1.25 million subscribers. Maharashtra telecom circle contributed the maximum to this addition. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi added more than four lakh subscribers each during the month. The broadband connections rose to 2.12 million by the end of January 2006 and coverage of broadband connectivity by public sector service providers has reached 815 cities. Currently, the total number of existing ISP licencees is 383 Under Bharat Nirman Programme, out of the 66,822 villages, 39741 villages have been provided with village public telephone. NEW YORK: Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd. said on Thursday it is recalling 205,000 ThinkPad computer battery packs made by Japan's Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. because they pose a fire hazard.

The recall comes after similar recalls of millions of Sony Corp.-made batteries in laptop computers from Dell Inc., Apple Inc. and Toshiba Corp.

Lenovo and IBM said in September they were recalling more than half a million notebook computer batteries made by Sony after a computer caught fire at the Los Angeles International Airport.

The lithium-ion extended-life batteries can overheat and cause a fire if they are struck forcefully, such as when they fall to the ground, Lenovo and Sanyo said.

There were four reports in the United States of batteries overheating and damaging the notebook and one case in Europe, said Lenovo spokesman Ray Gorman. One of the cases caused minor property damage and another case caused minor eye irritation from smoke and sparks, he said.

"If you have it in your hand and it goes one or two inches and hits the ground, that's not going to do it," Gorman said. "It has to be maybe desktop height."

Sanyo, the world's biggest maker of lithium-ion batteries in 2005 according to research firm J-Star Global, will financially support the recall, the Lenovo spokesman said.

The defect occurred in the joint design of the battery packs, not because of an internal battery cell problem, the two companies said.

"From our perspective, we've identified a problem, we've figured it out quickly and we're taking aggressive steps to fix it," said Gorman.

The recall includes about 100,000 battery packs in the United States, the country's Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

No lawsuits have been filed against Sanyo as a result of the defect, said Keith Matulich, a lawyer for Sanyo Energy (USA) Corp.

Lenovo sold the batteries with new ThinkPad notebook PCs or as optional or replacement batteries for the following ThinkPad models: R Series (R60 and R60e), T Series (T60 and T60p) and Z Series (Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p).

The recalled 9-cell batteries have the part number FRU P/N 92P1131, which can be found on the battery label.

Air india - IA Merger approved by cabinet...

Cabinet clears Air India, Indian merger

Clearing the last hurdle, the cabinet passed the Air India and Indian merger reports CNBC-TV18.

 

The government will continue to be the sole owner of the merged entity. It will look for IPOs after approval of a committee consisting of the finance ministry.

 

The merger structure is yet to be set in place and consultations with stakeholders and employees will continue.

 

The decision on branding & headquarters will be decided in consultation with the ministry of  civil aviation. V.Thulasidas, Air India’s chairman says that for the merger itself, a new company will be formed.

 

The government has not announced what the name of the merged entity will be, but sources say it might be called Air Indian since the Indian brand does not have much equity.
