The flipping ship

The

FLIP

research vessel (Floating Instrument Platform) is the only ship in the world having the ability to flip from a horizontal position to a vertical position while at sea.

www.FunAndFunOnly.net

The FLIP ship is designed to study wave height, acoustic signals, water temperature and density, and for the collection of meteorological data.

www.FunAndFunOnly.net

FLIP is 108 meters long and weighs 700 long tons. According to

Alan Bellows

, "when in horizontal traveling mode, the long, hollow ballast area trails behind. When it reaches the desired location, the "tail" is flooded until the nose sticks straight up into the air, taking about twenty-eight minutes to reach vertical position".

Even in stormy conditions, it is as stable as a fencepost, because most of its length lies in the untroubled waters beneath the waves.

During the flip, the crew stand on the outside decks. Scientists and crewmembers literally walk up the walls to stay upright. Suddenly, the aft side of the barge becomes its floor. That makes for some ingenious engineering feats in equipping its bridge, galley, crew quarters and scientific laboratory. Even its head, or bathroom, had to be constructed to operate in a vertical and horizontal position.

www.FunAndFunOnly.net

As you can see in the video, some of FLIP's furnishings are also built so they can rotate to a new position.

In 1995, FLIP received a $2,000,000 modernization. The structural build is currently excellent and instrumentation will allow FLIP to be an oceanographic powerhouse in the future.

Really effective…

1. Disable Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  • Click the Add/Remove Window Components
  • Uncheck the Indexing services
  • Click Next

2. Optimise Display Settings

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click System
  • Click Advanced tab
  • In the Performance tab click Settings
  • Leave only the following ticked:
  • Show shadows under menus
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer
  • Show translucent selection rectangle
  • Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
  • Use visual styles on windows and buttons

3. Speedup Folder Browsing

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

  • Open My Computer
  • Click on Tools menu
  • Click on Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
  • Click Apply
  • Click Ok
  • Reboot your computer

Speed up windows xp shutdown

Speed up windows xp shutdown

Whenever you shut down your computer, it takes a lot of time in closing all the running applications. And worse, if they stop responding, then you have to click either end task or wait for windows to shut it down. Now you can apply a registry hack that automatically shuts the non-responding annoying applications instantly and without any interruption. Apply the following registry hack to speed up windows xp.

1. Open regestry editor from Start -> Run -> type regedit
2. Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
on the left side of the registry editor window.
3. Double click on AutoEndTasks key from the right window and assign the value to be 1. The default value is 0.

Reverting the process is also very simple. Just change the AutoEndTasks value to 0.

Subject: How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista

Manual steps to determine whether the Winsock2 key is corrupted for Windows XP users

To determine if the symptoms are caused by a problem with the Winsock2 key,use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Netdiag tool

To use the Netdiag tool, you must install the Microsoft Windows XP Support Tools. To do so, follow these steps.

Notes

If you already have Support Tools installed, go to the second procedure in this section.

If you do not have Support Tools installed and you do not have the Windows XP Setup CD, go to Method 2.

1.

Insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and then locate the Support\Tools folder.

2.

Double-click the Setup.exe file.

3.

Follow the steps on the screen until you reach the Select An Installation Type screen.

4.

On the Select An Installation Type screen, click Complete, and then click Next.

When the installation is complete, follow these steps:

1.

Click Start, click Run, type Command, and then click OK.

2.

Type netdiag /test:winsock, and then press ENTER.

The Netdiag tool will return the test results for several network components, including the Winsock. For more details about the test, use /v at the end of the netdiag command: netdiag /test:winsock /v

Method 2: Use the Msinfo32 program

Note Use this method only if you do not have a Windows XP Setup CD and you do not have Support Tools installed.

1.

Click Start, click Run, type Msinfo32, and then click OK.

2.

Expand Components, expand Network, and then click Protocol.

3.

You will have ten sections under Protocol. The section headings will include the following names if the Winsock2 key is undamaged:

MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]

MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]

RSVP UDP Service Provider

RSVP TCP Service Provider

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...

If the names are anything different from those in this list, the Winsock2 key is corrupted, or you have a third-party add-on, such as proxy software, installed.

If you have a third-party add-on installed, the name of the add-on will replace the letters "MSAFD" in the list.

If there are more than ten sections in the list, you have third-party additions installed.

If there are fewer than ten sections, there is information missing.

Note These entries represent an installation with only the TCP/IP protocol installed. You can have a working Winsock and see additional entries if another protocol is installed. For example, if you install NWLink IPX/SPX, you will see 7 additional sections, for a total of 17. Below is an example heading of one of the new sections:

MSAFD nwlnkipx [IPX]

Also, each of the new sections that are created by installing NWLink IPX/SPX start with "MSAFD." Therefore, there are still only two sections that do not start with those letters.

If the Netdiag test fails, or if you determined that there is Winsock corruption by looking at Msinfo32, you must repair the Winsock2 key by using the steps in the next section.

Manual steps to recover from Winsock2 corruption

Windows XP with Service Pack 2 instructions

To repair Winsock if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note Restart the computer after you run this command. Additionally, for computers that are running Windows XP SP2, there is a new netsh command that can rebuild the Winsock key. For more information, visit the following Web site:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457156.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457156.aspx)

Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall, or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality.

Note If these steps do not resolve the problem, follow the steps in the next section.

Windows XP without Service Pack 2 instructions

To repair Winsock if you do not have Windows XP SP2 installed, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
