Green Generation in Action

Plastic carry bags lying in garbage heaps and blowing here and there has become a common sight today which not only is an eye-sore but also has serious environmental implications. It is high time that we remind ourselves of the grim fact that we are suffocating Mother Earth every minute with more than a million plastic bags which will stay for centuries to come, long after we and several of our coming generations have left the planet. These are non-biodegradable, as they take billions of years to degrade.

April 22nd, 2009 (the Earth Day), marks the beginning of The Green Generation Campaign and hence the Ahmedabad Youth is also undertaking an initiative towards the same.

To create awareness on the impacts of usage of plastic carry bags and emphasize on the need to shift to alternatives, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) through its South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN) Secretariat launches the campaign on “SAY NO TO PLASTIC CARRY BAGS” in Ahmedabad, starting from April 22, 2009 to June 5, 2009 (the World Environment Day).

Between April 22nd and mid May, youth will interact with community in the Memnagar, Bodakdev, Vastrapur Area to conduct surveys, create awareness on the harmful effects of plastic carry bags and identify individuals & groups interested to work for the campaign. Following this, till June 5th, a series of activities and events such as Nukkad Naataks, Rallies, Exhibitions and Competitions would be conducted along with other interested youth groups such as AASH Foundation etc.

As quoted famously “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children”. So, let’s stop the use of polythene bags and be a part of the solution.
