Subject: Ahmedabad First - a successful launch!
Importance: High

Dear All,

Ahmedabad First has come into being today on 18th April 2011, celebrated worldwide as World Heritage Day. Leading citizens of Ahmedabad – industrialists, key cultural personalities, educationists, key government figures and media people were invited and took part in the birth of this movement. Here's a quick snapshot.

The event was flagged off with a keynote address by Mr Madhukar Kamath, Group CEO & MD, Mudra Group. He emphasized the need to preserve and protect the unique heritage of Ahmedabad, while enumerating some of the unique firsts of Ahmedabad, such as the first city to have an underground sewage system, the birthplace for the first large-scale non-violence freedom movement in India, the first city to have a lady governor, etc. He also pledged the support of the Mudra Group in Ahmedabad’s march towards the World Heritage City status.  He outlined the role of Ahmedabad First to be the focal point of all the efforts for this cause, by being Aggregators and Integrators of the various initiatives happening across the city. He sought the support of everyone in achieving this status for the city by 2012.

Debashish Nayak, Advisor, Heritage Programme, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation followed up by setting the context of the event – what makes Ahmedabad eligible for World Heritage City status and appreciating the advantages that this status brings to the city.

This was followed by an enlightening and energetic panel discussion that was moderated by Dr Ashok Ranchhod, Director, MICA and had the following eminent participants:

1.     Subrata Bhowmick, one of India’s leading graphic designers and a name to reckon with in the field of design

2.     Ela Bhatt, Founder, SEWA & a social activist of immense repute

3.     Abhay Mangaldas, renowned industrialist and heritage conservationist

4.     Jaxay Shah, Head of Savvy Infrastructure Ltd. and also associated with the Ahmedabad Heritage Foundation

5.     Prof. Utpal Sharma, Dean, School of Planning, CEPT

6.     Mr Vinay Panjwani, VP & Co-Founder, Yuva Unstoppable

7.     Mr P K Ghosh, IAS (Retd), ex Municipal Commissioner, Chairman, Heritage Conservation Committee

8.     Debashish Nayak, Advisor, Heritage Programme, AMC

Some key points that emerged from the panel discussion and the ensuing audience participation were related to conservation of heritage architecture as a big challenge, increase in awareness of heritage among the general public, need for realism while planning for heritage conservation, necessity to inculcate pride among people regarding their heritage, etc.

This panel discussion was followed by a pledge that was led by our own Mr Chandan Nath and taken by all in the panel and audience to work towards achieving the World Heritage City status for Ahmedabad at the earliest. This brought the event to a close.

The city has celebrated its 600th birthday this year. Ahmedabad has applied for the status of World Heritage City from UNESCO.  Accomplishment of this milestone will make Ahmedabad the first ever Indian World Heritage City, as against 200 in Europe, 3 in China, even 1 each in Sri Lanka and Nepal. We would have played a small role with a sustained drive of this initiative. This is what Bobby meant when he wanted us to take each idea & make it large.

It was a matter of great pride for everyone at Ignite Mudra today, in fact the extended Mudra Family itself. Overall, Ahmedabad First would be the first such initiative that would unify all efforts towards making Ahmedabad India’s first World Heritage City and will need to be supported in every way possible by all proud and interested ‘Amdavadis’ & 'Mudraites'. It will soon have an online presence through its website, www.ahmedabadfirst.com , and would seek contributions in terms of content, pictures and information to create a single point where all World Heritage City efforts can be showcased. Several other follow up ideas are being thought up, all suggestions, tips & comments are welcome on ahmedabadfirst@gmail.com

This event, at such a short notice, would not have been possible without the active involvement of some people from Ignite Mudra. Ronak Shah & his team comprising of Shresth & Yashraj pulled out all stops to ensure that the event was smoothly executed from planning to execution. Take a bow guys. Vivek, Dipen & Kedar (KD) for turning around a lovely logo & accompanying creative elements, from invites to mailers to backdrop to standee to poster to the pledge itself, including an unreleased press ad were all well received. Take a look at them (attached). Krishnaraj for helping with the planning of the event & for acting as speech-writer, copy-writer & journalist rolled into one. Arul for ensuring that there was a significant audience turn-out at the venue. Mehul & Siddhanth for being there at various points during the process. Everybody else at Ignite Mudra for supporting the cause & the event in every possible way, pat yourselves on the back.

This note of thanks would be incomplete without thanking Mr. Debashish Nayak for his untiring spirit & enthusiasm for Ahmedabad & his passion for making Ahmedabad a World Heritage City, who was always around to help & guide us in every possible way. Last but not the least, Chandan Nath for being a part of every bit that we did towards this event, from co-ordinating with various members of the team, to talking to eminent people to giving me constant feedback on all aspects. Mr. Shailendra Nautiyal for organising the support from Yuva Unstoppable at a very short notice, which will be a very important part of the future of this initiative.

Mr. Kamath, thank you for suggesting we do something around the 600 years celebration, being there and taking it from the front. Your presence bolstered our spirits. Prof. Ranchhod for agreeing at once to be a part of this initiative, even agreeing to host it at MICA, thank you Sir.

warm regards

CNN Breaking News : Japanese nuclear agency "provisionally" raises the threat level from a stricken power plant from 5 to 7, the most severe category.

Nuclear power is far too dangerous/beyond human control – Germany

The last remaining advocates of the technology must realize that we can't go on like this. It is over. Done. Finished. Nuclear energy cannot be controlled by humans, no matter how good the arguments might be in its favour. The danger of disaster is real, and it can happen at any time - even in a super high-tech country like Japan."

Japanese nuclear agency "provisionally" raises the threat level from a stricken power plant from 5 to 7, the most severe category.

The 1986 Chernobyl accident in the former Soviet Union also rated a 7 on the International Nuclear Events Scale, which equates to a "major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures."

A Japanese official says the release of radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant is about 10% of what was emitted at Chernobyl.

Research on Masala Dosa Eating

Attached Image

There are many ways to eat a masala dosa .Whatever the way one eats, there is a very good reason for doing that. It shows some traits of the person that is you..

Case 1: People who open the masala dosa and eat it: These are the people who are very open about their life. Everyone one the persons friends would know all about him/her. I have generally seen guys do this rather than girls. Some people think that it is a gross way of eating but in truth, these people are just portraying who they are and how their life is.

Case 2: People who start from both ends and approach the masala later: These are the people who like to wait for the exiting things to come to their life. Sadly when the times comes, they are not too interested or just do not know how to enjoy it to the fullest. These are the folks who just want life as either dry or exiting. They just do not know how to phase their life and enjoy it no matter what. There are two types of people within this group.

Case 2.1: People who do not finish all the masala: These folks just do not care as much for the fun times as they are already brought down by the harsh reality of life. The dry periods in their life has left them with so much scars that they do not want to be really happy when the time is right. They just take only as much as they needed and end their life. A very sorry state indeed.

Case 2.2: People who finish all the masala with the little dosa they have: These are the folks who just are the extremes. They just go all out in life. No matter it is dark or bright. They may not enjoy life to the fullest but they sure make sure that they get every single good and bad thing out of life. Sometimes these folks are really hard to get along with. They are either your best friends or your worst enemies. They do not have a middle path at all.

Case 3: People who start from the middle and proceed to both ends: These are the people who like to get right to what they think is their best part of life. Usually these guys finish of the good portions in a hurry and get stuck with nothing but worst parts of their life. The thing to note among these people is that the tendency to burn out very early in their life. Like the above case, there are two kinds of people in this group too.

Case 3.1: People who do not finish the dosa: These folks are really the saddest of people. They are the ones who tend to end their life as soon as it hits the bad patch. For them, they only need and want the best things in life and nothing more. Typically, they are not prepared or tuned to life as a whole. They just want to enjoy from first till last. Sadly, no one in the world can live without even an ounce of sadness in life. Not even the richest of the richest. But to self destruct at the mere sign of distress is very bad. That is what these guys tend to do. Some learn to live life but most of them do not.

Case 3.1: People who do finish the dosa: These folks are the typical human beings. We all enjoy the greatest of times in life and push the sad parts thinking about the great times in life. Typically the plate is clean and nothing is left for fate or in life. Happiness and sadness are part of life and these guys know that and are kind of prepared for it. Life is not always happy but there are moments of happiness here and there.

Case 4: People who eat the dosa making sure that the masala lasts for the whole dosa: These people are very rare. These are the people who like to attain balance in their life. It is hard to displease these people and it is hard to make them really happy. They like their balance and are very protective of it. Sadly these are the people who tend to be lonely as anyone else may upset the balance of their system... Perfectionist to the core and are very careful. These guys do not make the best company but are needed in any group to make the group from going hay wire.

Case 5: People who do not share and eat the dosa as if it is precious: These folks are very protective about their life. They do not want anyone to come and interfere in their life. They like to hide their true nature and intensions for their benefit. Beware of such people as they are in every group for their own need and nothing else.

Case 6: People who offer the first bite to others: These guys are overly friendly. They do anything to be part of a group and make everyone feel like the group is important than the individuals. They are the glue that holds any group together. They are very friendly and bring the best of all the others in the group. They go out of their way to help other friends. Most groups should have a person like this and they are the ones who plan the group outings and other group activities. Once this person is out of the group, typically the group slowly falls apart.

Case 7: People who take one or two bites and then offer the dosa to others: These guys care about friends and friendship but they take their time to get into the group. They take their time in making friends and they typically are very committed once into the friendship. These guys like to always be in the side lines and typically do not jump into anything in life. They always take their time to analyze the situation and then make a decision. These guys take the better safe than sorry approach.

Case 8: People who wait for others to make the offer first: Typical people I must say. They are unsure about everything. Even if they wanted to offer, they will wait till the other person offers the food first. If the other person is silent, so are these people. They are the followers. They do terrific idea, they will pitch it to someone else and get their advice before proceeding. Sadly, most of the elderly world like these types of people.

Case 9: People who offer dosa only when they cannot finish it on their own: You all may be familiar with these kinds of people. People who are very generous only when all their needs are fulfilled. These folks are selfish but at the same time not misers or greedy. They just want to satisfy themselves before they give it to the world. They typically do not stuff themselves nor do they tend to starve. They are very good people who would give you the best of advices in life. They would make sure that you are not sad following their advice.

Case 10: People who offer the whole dosa and eat from others plates: These folks are other extreme. They know what they want, they get what they want but they cannot enjoy what they want. Instead they tend to settle for other things in life which satisfies the needs but does not satisfy the person completely. These guys are termed as born losers cause even when they have the thing they wanted, they can't stop others from stealing it from them.

So next time you sit with a person eating a masala dosa, look closely and see if he falls into one of the above categories. You may be surprised how much it reveals about the person*

Enjoy eating the Masala Dosa!!!

 REGARDS---

We won!!! After a massive and unprecedented outpouring of public pressure, the government has given in and met all of Anna Hazare's demands!!

Over 500,000 of us signed the petition - at one point 30,000 people per hour! The petition was widely covered in the national press as evidence that the anti-corruption movement was growing like wildfire across the nation -- ramping up the pressure on the government.

This is just the beginning -- there will be more chances for corrupt politicians to stop this bill -- but if we stick together, we can make this the beginning of the end for the poisonous culture of corruption that stifles this nation. Let's take this moment to celebrate together, thank each other, and share thoughts for all the possibilities of the road ahead. Click below to join a live chat of our entire community:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/anna_hazare_victory/?vl

The government delivered a signed commitment to Hazare this morning at 10am, promising to accept a committee to finalize the drafting of the jan lokpal bill that is 50% composed and led by civil society. PM Singh further promised to table this bill for a vote by the next parliamentary session. In response, Hazare has declared an end to his fast.

The country is buzzing with excitement and optimism at this tremendous victory. We've received a flood of emails of enthusiasm and support. Everyone is saying that this is like the return of the satyagraha movement - to liberate India once again from a new kind of tyranny. But this time Satyagraha has a powerful ally in technology and the way citizens can rapidly mobilize online to join and strengthen the call for change.

Jan Lokpal will set up a truly independent body that investigate and charge corruption anywhere in the government, even the PM's office. It is a dagger aimed at the heart of corruption. Many politicians will do everything they can to stop it, and it will take all of our vigilance and commitment to make sure it becomes law. But it will become law, because today showed that people power is stronger than any corrupt politicians, and now that we know that, there's no going back. A new India is being born, let's build it together.

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Saloni, Shibayan, Alice, Parvinder, Ben and the whole Avaaz team.

Subject: Anna Hazare and his fight for the Lokpal Bill

1. Who is Anna Hazare?
An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra
3. So what?
This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?
This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?
He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.
6. How that can be possible?
He is advocating for a Bil, The Lok Pal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.
Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the LOK PAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.
Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?

At least we can spread the message. How?
Putting status message, links, video, changing profile pics.
At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.
At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.
At least we can pray for his good health.

Spread the above word to the entire world.

Let us fight for justice -- Justice delayed is justice denied.

Kind Regards,

You Never achieve real success, unless you like what you are doing.

Anna Hazare - Jago Bharat ke Nagrik Jago

Dear friends across globe,

Right now, Anna Hazare, a 73-year-old Gandhian, sits in the burning sun fasting, and he will stay until death -- unless the government agrees to consider a powerful law that could rid Indian politics of the scourge of corruption.

This "Modern Mahatma" is taking the utmost act of courage and determination to push through a bill that would give an independent body the power to punish corruption -- even in the Prime Minister's office. Across the country a movement has exploded, and a media storm of pressure has been sparked that's engulfing Singh. But dirty politicians are desperately trying to water down or kill the law.

For the first time in forty three years, we have the chance to change the way politics is done. Let's join together and stand with Anna Hazare to tackle corruption and clean up Indian politics. We have no time to lose -- sign the petition to Prime Minister Sing h and send this on to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_anna_hazare_fb/97.php?cl_tta_sign=738eb8eb797cf5aadba655db48d42f66

Hazare is championing a citizen-developed bill called "Jan" Lokpal that will create an independent body, selected by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities, with enough power to investigate and punish all politicians. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence its investigations.

Since 1968, when this bill was first introduced, greedy politicians have thwarted its passing. Now the government is pushing for a watered down Lokpal with no hope of ending fraud, vice and dishonesty -- it gives politicians overriding power to decide who will be investigated, and is a complete eyewash.

Pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Singh to endorse the "Jan" Lokpal. Members of the opposition pa rty have begun to make the right noises in support of Anna Hazare. And even the National Advisory Council, a powerful advisory body to Sonia Gandhi have come out in favour of the bill. But corrupt politicians and vested interests are doing all they can to kill it.

Anna Hazare has set the example. But only a national citizens movement can ramp up the pressure to get Singh to endorse "Jan" Lokpal and save Hazare's life. Sign the petition and forward it to everyone now:

Corruption in politics has become a plague across our country, it is draining our resources and demoralizing our nation. This bill would go a long way to deterring those that steal and undermine the public good. Last year, the Avaaz community in Brazil won an important vic tory -- against the odds millions of people came together and pushed through a historic anti-corruption law. India has a proud history of people power overcoming oppression -- today if we all stand with one voice we can fight this corruption that is poisoning our political system.

With hope,

Saloni, Shibayan, Ricken, Ben and the whole Avaaz team.

"The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, But because of the silence of good people!"    - Napoleon

There is no point in just saying “I Love my India” , raise your voice for right demands.

Anna Hazare fasts unto death starting 5th April.

He is demanding enactment of a strong anti-corruption law - Jan Lokpal Bill - to ensure swiftness and certainty of punishment to the corrupt.
Will his fast have any impact on the deaf  Government of India?

Yes, it certainly would. Because, last time when Anna sat on fast

                • 6 corrupt ministers in Maharashtra had to resign
                • 400 corrupt officers were dismissed from job
                • 2002 - Maharashtra RTI Act was passed
                • 2006 - Central Government withdrew its proposal to amend Central RTI Act

Now Anna is fasting to demand Jan Lokpal Bill.

JAN LOKPAL BILL will act as deterrent and instill fear in the minds of corrupt people.

What can you do?

"Let the whole nation pray for a corruption free India. Collective prayers are very powerful. Let the whole nation pray against corruption," appeals Anna Hazare.

"Lets reach Jantar Mantar in thousands, in lakhs from 5th April. I will be there - day and night - with Anna. We will all sleep on the roads of Jantar Mantar. Anna's fast can change India's history. Can't you take a few days off from your work and be a part of it?" Arvind Kejriwal

"Send us a missed call at 02261550789 to stay updated about this movement. Forward this mail to everyone,"

Salient features of Jan Lokpal Bill

Drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde, Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal, this Bill has been refined on the basis of feedback received from public on website and after series of public consultations. It has also been vetted by and is supported by Shanti Bhushan, J M Lyngdoh, Kiran Bedi, Anna Hazare etc. It was sent to the PM and all CMs on 1st December.

1.      An institution called LOKPAL at the centre and LOKAYUKTA in each state will be set up

2.      Like Supreme Court and Election Commission, they will be completely independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence their investigations.

3.      Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore: Investigations in any case will have to be completed in one year. Trial should be completed in next one year so that the corrupt politician, officer or judge is sent to jail within two years.

4.      The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction.

5.      How will it help a common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.

6.      So, you could approach Lokpal if your ration card or passport or voter card is not being made or if police is not registering your case or any other work is not being done in prescribed time. Lokpal will have to get it done in a month’s time. You could also report any case of corruption to Lokpal like ration being siphoned off, poor quality roads been constructed or panchayat funds being siphoned off. Lokpal will have to complete its investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the guilty will go to jail within two years.

7.      But won’t the government appoint corrupt and weak people as Lokpal members? That won’t be possible because its members will be selected by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities and not by politicians, through a completely transparent and participatory process.

8.      What if some officer in Lokpal becomes corrupt? The entire functioning of Lokpal/ Lokayukta will be completely transparent. Any complaint against any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and the officer dismissed within two months.

9.      What will happen to existing anti-corruption agencies? CVC, departmental vigilance and anti-corruption branch of CBI will be merged into Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and machinery to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.
